"Why on earth would I need a gold hand for that? The giant phallic symbol strapped to my back does it well enough." Still, she's pleased that he's laughing, and it shows on her face. Hawke appreciates her companions, even though she spends half her time wanting to throw them off a bridge.

She finds it fascinating that he doesn't react to that, because he's certainly the sort of arrogant ass who seems like he would. It gets filed away as well, a note to poke and prod at it later, or at least remember it should it become relevant again.

The frown earns a laugh from her. "Absolutely. You joined me, didn't you? Can't imagine what you were thinking."

"A higher sense of nobility, of course. You'd do well to find yourself in that particular mindset. If you can do it, what's stopping you?" Jaime shrugs easily enough, that grin still firmly planted on his handsome face.

"Can't really say that I was, if you're seeking honesty here, Hawke." Jaime's been a loner for so long, but once he had taken command of the Kingsguard, that sense of companionship, of brotherhood that he was trying to forge, he missed that. He missed the ease of friendship he had with Brienne.

He missed people when he had never cared about them before. That's why he joined her.

She's already scrunching up her face by the time the word 'nobility' is half out of his mouth. "The mess." That's her answer to his question, at least. "Bodies explode enough around me already, I'm not going to invite--" Wait. "--I'm not going to invite it even more than I already do."

If he were a little less twitchy, she'd sling an arm around his shoulders. As it is, she just nudges him again. "See? That's why I let you stick around." Crazy people only, apparently.

He has met few people unsuited for the role of noble, but Hawke definitely fits the mold on that one. It is messy, tricky, a world of pretty smiles and even prettier daggers in your back. Not that he says that. He's a bastard, after all. "You might find yourself without that choice one of these days."

He rolls his eyes again. "Let me stick around, do you?"

"Nonsense," she breezes, and tries not to think of the all too many moments in her life when she's had her choices stripped from her. "If there isn't one, I'll create one. My giant sword is a multi-purpose implement."

She raises an eyebrow back at him. "Well I haven't chased you off, have I? You're a moderately unpleasant individual to be around half the time, I doubt anyone would blame me."

"Swords are sometimes the only weapon that doesn't seem to get the job done correctly," Jaime murmurs with a distant look, but then he shakes his head and grins. "I've heard crossbows can work out just as well, should the need arise. Varric might be the smartest one you've captured on this journey."

And then he snorts. The idea of anyone chasing off him is absolutely ridiculous. Unpleasant, annoying, a bastard, these are things he might be. But even one-handed, there is no man like Jaime Lannister.

Or Rivers. Whoever he is.

"Are you sure you're speaking of me and not a few others you call your friends?"
