"Lull people into a false sense of security by being so incredibly charming they think I couldn't possibly cause any harm," Thorne corrects with a look of hurt on his face. Rude, Cinder. Just rude. "And no, that's not the secret. You can't know the secret just yet."

He doesn't see the eyeroll, but honestly, he can hear it in her voice. He tries to nudge her back with his foot - and completely misses. "I'm a deep man. Haven't you noticed yet?"

Despite herself, Cinder leans in a little bit. It's supposed to be making fun of him, but there's a little bit of curiosity there, too. "So when do I get to know it?"

She laughs a little when he misses. "I'm right here, how did you go so wide?" And then her tone turns totally deadpan. "No. Not at all."

He can feel her moving in. It's not like the same kind of warmth that Cress gives off when she steps in too close, but he can still feel her nearby, hear her breathing, the shift of her legs. Sometimes, being blind has its interesting advantages.

He'd still rather be able to see.

There's a pause from him before he gives a choking laugh. Is she... flirting? No. Cinder doesn't know how to do that. Does she? He leans in, voice dropping to a whisper. "Do you really want to?"

A sigh. "I'm still blind, you know." He makes a face. "You're a cruel princess."

The laugh surprises her, mostly because she doesn't understand what she said that's funny. And then he leans in and - surely he doesn't realise how close his face is to hers right now? Cinder thinks that if she could blush, she probably would right now. Which is stupid, because this is Thorne. There's no reason in the world why Carswell Thorne should be making her blush. She wants to make it a smooth transition, shifting away, but she mostly just jerks back in something like shock.

"--Well you've gone and made a big deal out of it, now," she huffs, trying to cover herself. "And I'm not cruel. You're just over-dramatic."

Thorne laughs again when she jerks away like that. He doesn't know her thoughts, but he knows her. The fact that they're still even holding hands - is it weird that they're holding hands? what does that mean? - is a big step up for Cinder of all people.

"I am over-dramatic. Thank you for noticing. And of course I made it a big deal. This is me we're talking about it."

"Stop laughing," she grumbles, pushing his leg with hers again. She should let go of his hand. Or make him let go of hers. Whichever it is, it should stop.

"Are you going to tell me, or not?" She doesn't let go.

He'd let go if she told him to - maybe. But for right now, it's grounding. Real. He knew she was alive, okay, but this is just concrete proof. "As her highness commands." With his free hand, he zips his mouth shit.

There's a shrug now as he points to his closed mouth.

She scowls at him. "One of these days I'm going to hit you, and it'll be with my metal hand. I said stop laughing, not stop talking."

Honestly, she really wants to know what the big deal is about this secret, even if she's pretty sure it's just more of his - Thorne-ness. Knowing him, though, she wouldn't be surprised if he just refused to speak for the rest of the day.

Actually, that might make for a nice change.

"Not if I keep hold of it. Also hitting a blind man is a little low, don't you think?" What was that about being silent? Oh, yeah, that's completely forgotten by now.

As for the secret, there really is none, but Thorne likes the way that it has Cinder interested. Has her looking.

Honestly, the idea of Thorne being silent is way more disturbing than him being blind. And that's bad enough as it is. "Keep a hold of--?" It takes her glacing down at their conjoint hands again to realise just what he means, and she fervently thanks her body for not being able to blush right now. Not that he could see it, but she wouldn't put it past Thorne to just know.

"You won't be blind forever," she says after a beat, pretending like she hadn't just completely failed to finish her sentence. There are all kind of implications there that she'd probably read to much into, and would only confuse her anyway, if she tried to unpack them.

"Yes, your hand." He says that slowly, like he's trying to explain to her that this is her hand in his, not just some random object from nowhere. "The one that is currently holding mine because I believe you might have been a little bit worried about me."

Ruining moments, Thorne-style.

He's quiet for a second before snorting. "Definitely not. That would be too much of a shame to keep me blind forever."

But he worries, if he's going to be honest. Worries that he will be, that nothing will save his eyes again, that he can't be of use to Cinder. Can't help her win her throne.

[alltumbledown]

"I--" Stars, there can't be a man alive more frustrating than him. Without even thinking about it, she tugs her hand away from his, the metal fingers curling inwards. "You were holding it, not the other way around. And obviously I was worried. You'd have to be a monster to not care about someone hurtling towards Earth."

But she settles down again at that comment. Maybe he thinks he's hiding his worry, but she can read it on him. A beat passes, before she gives a heavy sigh, and reaches out to take his hand again. With her human one, this time. "We know it's reversible. We'll get it taken care of, and you'll be back to your usual obnoxious self. As opposed to your blind obnoxious self."

Ah, he knew that somewhere along the line, he was going to ruin it, and there her hand goes, leaving his empty. His fingers flex for a moment, before he closes his fist and drops the hand to his side instead. "You're not a monster, Cinder."

He's still for a moment, absorbing the fact that she knows, absorbing the fact that he is worried. But then he tugs on an obnoxious grin for her, because it's the best thing he can do for the both of them. "Assuming the good doctor will keep his word. I'm sure I'm not his favorite person."
