Logically, he knows she's not in any danger.

[ The Gallows, they had called it. And looking around, it's easy for Amell to see why. Although it's been a long time since she's felt the urge to downplay her abilities as a mage, she finds herself shifting to make the staff strapped to her back appear less notable.

When her ship finally meets the docks, all she can think is how her initial impression of Kirkwall is the smell of fire.

And not just any fire.

The stench of a funeral pyre is undeniable. Blood has been shed here. And as a hand drifts defensively to grab her staff, the Warden-Commander eyes the pluming smoke with more than a little scrutiny. The scene that lays before her is not a pleasant one, and as she steps off into the gallows, Amell sees two things in piles that makes her tense.

To one side, there is a mountain of abandoned staffs.

To the other, ownerless swords and templar armor.

What in the Maker's name had happened here? Her presence here was a favor to King Alistair, but it's with a sick sort of dread that Amell realizes this is going to be hitting a little too close to home.

Mages and templars killing each other.

It was almost enough to make her miss the Archdemon.

Amell takes a deep breath and starts towards the gates. Someone there should be able to tell her what was happening to Kirkwall ]

It's not stalking if you're already set to be partners with the guy, right? It's still technically illegal, overriding the Shatterdome's security systems so she could read his file, but that's the kind of shit they expected from Jim Kirk anyway.

The point is: totally not stalking. Satisfied that she's not a creeper, Jim satisfies herself some more by making sure she knows everything there is to know about Raleigh Becket before they toss her in a ring with him and a couple of sticks.

Academy records show nothing spectacular except his Drift capability. Jim isn't sure if that makes her miss Spock the technically perfect genius more, or less. Four kills in just over two years with Gipsy Danger, not bad even if the name is stupid as hell. Dead brother - everyone knows about that, and all things considered, Jim has decided that poking at dead family members in order to get yourself into a Jaeger is probably a tactic that only works once.

Assumed solo control of Gipsy Danger. That's it, the confirmation that she wants. Rumours about Raleigh Becket have been flying around for years, of course, but just that morning Jim had heard a rumour that she and Spock had been having a torrid love affair until she cheated on him with a medical officer, so she isn't exactly in the business of taking things on faith. Rumours are useful when you can make them work for you. Information gathering? Not so much.

"You bastard," she mutters, copying the files onto an old-school thumb drive. She's not exactly jealous - she knows the science, the incredible amounts of physical and neural strain that shit can put on a person. But - okay, maybe she's a little jealous. More than that, though, she's curious. Luckily for Jim (and the rest of the Shatterdome, a restless Jim is a nosy Jim), her alarm goes off right at that moment, signifying her first opportunity to sate some of that curiosity.

"Time to go hit on a pretty boy," she announces to her empty room, shutting the laptop down. It doesn't take her long to get to the training room; she walks in like she owns the place, dropping a wink at a younger trainee she's pretty sure she banged a month ago. Someone tosses her a stick, and she snatches it out of mid-air, the weapon comfortable in her grasp.

Blue eyes scan the room restlessly, looking for her new Mr. Spock. Bingo. Also, damn boy. She smiles, trying not to let it drift into a smirk as she holds out her hand to shake. "I was kind of expecting you to be taller. Jim - Jamie Kirk."

Things that are related to being a post-graduate student at an incredibly prestigious university with a scholarship that she really can't afford to lose.

But trouble follows Liam around, and Sophia's always had a powerful streak of curiosity. She's interested in seeing what he manages to attract in his natural habitat. She's more interested in heading it off before it gets dragged back to her flat.
